Oak Park is where Architecture lives. Possibly best known for having the largest concentration of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the world, the Oak Park Area plays host to visitors from all over the world — but that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things to do here. While Chicago boasts its monuments to business, we revel in the architecture of homes and the abundance of nature. This is the place to inspire creativity, encourage conservancy, and explore history.
History in the area is everywhere. The Oak Park Area is home to eight National Historic Landmarks including Unity Temple in Oak Park, the Haymarket Martyrs’ Monument in River Forest, and the entire Village of Riverside along with numerous National Historic sites. For the bookworms, there is Ernest Hemingway’s Birthplace and Museum. For the gamers, there is Pleasant Home, the home of the inventor of coin operated slot machines and father of the penny arcade. Speaking of arcades, there is also the world’s largest arcade, Galloping Ghost, in Brookfield.
Nature is very important here and the area is home to the Headquarters for the Cook County Forest Preserves. Within its thousands of acres in the area you will find miles of biking and hiking trails, places to hit the waves — see On The Water — go birdwatching, or drop a line and go fishing. The forest preserves are also the home of sites such as Brookfield Zoo, Go Ape Zipline Adventures and the Trailside Museum of Natural History.
