Famous Local History

The Oak Park Area is rich in Famous Local History beyond architects and authors.

Housed in a restored and eco-friendly historic firehouse is the Oak Park River Forest Museum. A repository for all things Oak Park and River Forest related, their rotating exhibits and guided tours of the area are both educational and highly entertaining. The Nineteenth Century Club was founded to serve and enrich the community and has been doing so for the Last 100 years hosting concerts, plays and events in their historic building.

The area is also graced with Olmsted’s Riverside, the entire Village having been designed by the famous Landscape Architect. The Olmsted Society conducts tours of the area throughout the summer highlighting special aspects of the area and providing a welcome relief from the grid system of community development. Cemetery tours are popular here too due to the number of notables buried in them. From the Haymarket Memorial Monument (National Historic Landmark) in Forest Park’s Forest Home Cemetery to Al Capone’s burial site in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside the cemeteries in the area are more like parks.

Gangster Tours are a must see when you visit the area because even some of the most famous mobsters wanted to live in the peace and quiet of the suburbs. And if your tastes favor a more “homey” 1950’s nostalgia, check into the Route 66 and Roadside Attractions because who will ever forget seeing the World’s Largest Laundromat or the site of the oldest White Castle?

Chicago’s 16 Inch Softball Hall of Fame and Museum in Forest Park is an experience for anyone who has ever played the game or just a sports fan in general. The beautiful new building on the grounds where the sport is played is great way to learn the history of the sport and see it played all in one place.

Our Famous Local History is as diverse as our community. There truly is something for everyone here.
