Des Plaines River

Canoe or Kayak

Des Plaines River is closed off to any kind of motor boating making it perfect to test your rowing skills. Be sure to check water conditions with the Forest Preserves of Cook County before departing since even a moderate rain could make the waterways dangerous.

Plank Road Meadow in Riverside is the place to head if you want to access the Des Plaines River by canoe or Kayak. From here you can travel north and go through Thatcher Woods or go east and pass through Riverside. Whichever you choose, wildlife and nature will surround you.

Hike, Bike, Horseback or Cross Country Ski

The popular Des Plaines River Trail system spans over 30 miles and nearly the entire length of Lake County.

This crushed gravel surface trail is perfect for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing. The trail offers a medium level of difficulty as it winds alongside tree-laden riverbanks, through dense bottom-land woods, adjacent to ponds and over footbridges. This trail links the Half Day Forest Preserve to the Wright Woods Forest Preserve spanning nearly the entire length of Lake County.
