SO MUCH TO LOVE
This month is the shortest but sweetest of the year. Valentine's Day, Lunar New Year, Mardi Gras, Black History Month and Bite the Burbs — there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this February, especially in the Oak Park area!
Read on to fall even further in love with the western suburbs and don't forget to mark these events, surrounded by a heart, on your calendar!
Black History Month
All month long
Honor and celebrate Black History Month with a visit to Maywood's historic Hampton House, where civil rights activist Fred Hampton lived during his youth. Inside the home is a museum dedicated to Hampton, who served as the deputy chairman of the national Black Panther Party and chair of its Illinois chapter before he was drugged, then shot and killed in his bed during a raid of his Chicago apartment conducted by a tactical unit of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. Make an appointment to visit the museum and learn more about the civil rights icon, who was considered a radical threat by the FBI for his anti-racist, anti-classist beliefs. The West Cook YMCA's aquatic center was named in his honor.
